Hello everyone! Thanks for clicking. I am Niharika and in today’s lesson, we are gonna
look at different Ways to Congratulate. Well, when great things happen to your friends or
to a family member or to a colleague. What’s the first thing that you do? Well, you congratulate
that person. Well, joyful times go hand in hand with congratulations. So why just stick
to the boring congratulations? Why not try some new phrases to congratulate someone?
So let’s have a look at six phrases that you can use instead of just saying the simple congratulations..
The very first one Felicitations, now felicitations is a latin phrase, it comes
from the Latin and it means good wishes. So if you want to stand out from the crowd,
who’s been wishing congratulations to someone, use this phrase say felicitations. For example,
your friend is getting married, so everybody is gonna be like, Hey congratulations! Congratulations.
Do something different. Say felicitations, I’m getting married, felicitations it means
good wishes, so it’s another phrase that you can use. The second one Hip hip hurray,
Have you heard that before? Hip hip hurray, well it is said or it is cheered three times
in a row. And it’s a cheering to express praise and appreciation. And in fact it is
usually cheered by a huge number of people, so for example maybe your school won some
competition or your college won a football match, so all the students of the school or
the college are gonna cheer Hip hip hurray, hip hip hurray, hip hip hurray. So that’s
three times in a row and it’s cheered to express, praise and appreciation. The other
one that I have for you is Three cheers, so three cheers for, three cheers as a phrase
is generally followed by the word “for” and the name of the person or the thing that’s
being celebrated. So for example three cheers for the newlyweds, so it is a way of congratulating
the newlyweds, three cheers for Sharon, she’s having a baby. So again you are congratulating
Sharon, because she’s having a baby, she’s pregnant. So that’s how you can use this
phrase. Now the forth one that I have for you is Kudos. Now kudos is generally used
in the corporate world, though it’s a very informal term, but yes it is used in the corporate
world, like someone does something really nice, so his work or his deeds have to be
appreciated. So rather than just saying congratulations, you can say kudos, Hey kudos to Mr. Smith
on doing fantastic job in his sales, probably the sales were excellent, the company made
a lot of profit, so kudos to Mr. Smith, so again you are congratulating that person,
you are expressing your wishes, you are expressing your praise. And
the next one that I have for you is Hats off to you. Now rather than just saying congratulations,
you can use the phrase hats off to you, now hats off to you it means, it’s kind of a
gesture of removing your hat, so it’s a sign of respect, you are showing respect to
that person, because that person has done something really nice. So you say hats off
to you, so this phrase is generally used, when you show respect or it’s a sign of
respect and appreciation. And then the last one that I have for you is Mazel tov. Now
mazel tov is a phrase used by Jewish people, and the literal meaning of this phrase is
good luck, however in English, when you end up using the phrase mazel tov, it is used
to congratulate someone, to give your good or best wishes to someone. So it is a Jewish
phrase and it’s used to congratulate someone, so the crowd mazel tov to the newlyweds. It
means the crowd congratulated the newlyweds. So you have six phrases now, if your friend
is having a baby, if your friend is getting married or your friend just got promoted,
don’t just stick to congratulations, use one of these six phrases. Sounds good to you?
I’ll be back with a new lesson, till then you take care and have a great day....
